The contest will be promoted in February to students in all University of Utah health professions schools and colleges, and to related programs: Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Health, Biomedical Informatics, Honors, and Communications.
Promotion will take place at the HS Student Council meeting on Tuesday, February 5th, via email to all relevant schools and colleges, via the Health Literacy Interest Group members, through university webpage and media outlets, and through printed flyers distributed across campus.
Interested participants will form teams. Teams may be anywhere from two to 10 participants, and may be interprofessional or composed from a single school or college.
Teams must register for the contest by Friday, March 1st by emailing Erica Lake at firstname.lastname@example.org. The email should include the names and departments of the team participants, and a brief description of the planned video.
Each team will create a 30 second to one minute public service announcement (PSA) video on a specific health literacy issue. Examples of health literacy issues include:
PSAs may be taped by the team members with their own equipment, or they may use iMovie in the Spencer S. Eccles Health Sciences Library's Mac lab. All PSAs must be submitted to Erica Lake no later than Monday, March 25th.
All videos will be shown during the first day of the Priscilla M. Mayden Lecture on Thursday, March 28th in the Eccles Institute of Human Genetics Auditorium. A panel of health literacy leaders will judge the videos and award first, second, and third place winners. First place team winners have their PSA aired on local TV stations, featured on Dr. Vivian Lee's blog, and promoted on university websites and social media outlets. In addition, first place team members will receive University Bookstore gift certificates, and all participants will be entered into a drawing for a Kindle.
